Description
Sermorelin acetate is a synthetic peptide consisting of the first 29 amino acids of human growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), with an amidated C-terminus. It is often written as GRF 1-29 or GHRH(1-29)NH2. This fragment is the shortest GHRH sequence reported to keep full activity at its receptor.
What is Sermorelin Acetate?
Native GHRH is a 44-amino-acid hypothalamic peptide that stimulates somatotroph cells in the anterior pituitary to synthesize and release growth hormone. It acts through the GHRH receptor, a class B G protein-coupled receptor that signals by raising cAMP and activating protein kinase A. Early structure-activity work found that the N-terminal 29 residues were sufficient for this activity, which led to the development of sermorelin.
Since it acts upstream of growth hormone, sermorelin leaves the normal feedback controls of the axis in place, including inhibition by somatostatin. Researchers use it to study pulsatile GH secretion, pituitary reserve, and downstream IGF-1 production in animal models. It also serves as the reference sequence for modified GHRH analogs such as CJC-1295 and tesamorelin, which were designed to resist cleavage by dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) near the N-terminus.
