Description
Kisspeptin-10 is the C-terminal decapeptide of kisspeptin, the protein product of the KISS1 gene (Tyr-Asn-Trp-Asn-Ser-Phe-Gly-Leu-Arg-Phe-NH2). It is the shortest kisspeptin fragment that retains full activity at the kisspeptin receptor, KISS1R (formerly GPR54).
What is Kisspeptin-10?
KISS1 was first described as a metastasis-suppressor gene, and its peptide product was originally named metastin. In 2003 two groups showed that loss-of-function mutations in KISS1R cause hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, which placed kisspeptin signalling at the top of the reproductive axis. Kisspeptin acts on GnRH neurons in the hypothalamus, and GnRH in turn drives release of LH and FSH from the pituitary. Kisspeptin-10 is widely used to probe this pathway because it is short, easy to synthesise and potent at KISS1R.
